Barb Hofer
grew up in the Similkameen valley and from an early age had
a love of art, which has stayed a focus throughout her life.
She is inspired by the natural beauty and biodiversity of
the landscapes, the seasonal changes, the animals and
plants, and the variety of agricultural bounty of the
Okanagan Similkameen.
She studied education at UBC and successfully combined her
artistic interests in painting and pottery with her teaching
talents.
Barb's
painting style is continually evolving as she experiments
with a variety of new techniques using watercolours,
acrylics and drawing materials. She enjoys the versatility
and spontaneity of working with watercolour as well as the
exciting possibilities of mixing colour and achieving
textural effects with acrylic inks on various papers. Mixed
media is a recent focus, using vibrant colours on masa paper
and using collage for interesting shapes and patterns. Local
landscapes and animals as well as the abundance of produce
and flowers grown in valley orchards, vineyards, and gardens
provide much of the subject matter for Barb's paintings.
Light and colour capture the serenity and excitement of the
exquisite rural settings depicted in many of her paintings.
Barb and her
husband live in Okanagan Falls. The rural setting of this
area provides daily visits from birds and deer as well as
spectacular views of mountains, lakes, and trees. Her
artwork may be viewed in her home studio and at art
galleries and wineries in the South Okanagan-Similkameen.
